Diving Pulau Weh

Actualizado: 20 oct 2019

The island is located between the warm water of the Andaman Sea and the cold water from the Indian Ocean. Thanks to this, there are several currents that create a perfect habitat for a whole variety of species with clear water and good visibility. Coral reefs, fan corals, turtles, reefs sharks, manta rays... are some examples of the animals you can see.

Monster Divers is the centre I have been diving with since the first time at 2017 when I did the open water. My opinion might be influenced due to one of the owners is my familiar, but I have experienced many incredible moments there so I hardly recommend it to you. Three friendly Spanish guys and their team will welcome you and show many different places discovering their nice world under the sea.

A nice dive centre surrounded by wild animals and a kind staff will make your stay very comfortable. They also have a Spanish restaurant where you will be able to eat delicious "croquetas" among plenty other dishes. Nowadays they are building an oven to cook pizzas! It may be that when you go, you can already eat pizzas.

There are many dive places at Pulau Weh, most of them on the north coast. Of course, I haven't been at all of them, but the ones I did, it was amazing.

House Reef

The beach just in front of the Monster diver's centre at Gapang is very beautiful. There are many fishes and coral in the east part. Most of the diving classes are done here as it is not so deep and doesn't need the boat. Even so, you can enjoy a lot doing snorkelling or a night dive there.

At the pictures we can see: yellow boxfish juvenile, powderblue surgeonfish, earle's soldierfish.

Limbo Gapang

Limbo Gapang is located at the east of Gapang beach. There is a buoy in the middle of the see that indicates a small mound full of life. The dive route and the animals you can see varies according to the deep you get.

At the pictures we can see: A fals clawn anemonefish, monarch damsel, cuttlefish, blue-spotted ribbontail ray, checkerboard wrasse, trumpetfish, oriental butterflyfish, cross's damsel, pacific half and half chromis, redfin anthias, reticulated dascyllus, longnose butterflyfish, scalefin anthias female, nudibranch.

At the videos we can see: a cuttlefish laying eggs and an octopus changing colours.

Volcano

A little further than Limbo, at another small bay, there is an underwater volcano. It can be seen from earth and have a coffee while enjoying the views at volcano coffee shop. The dive here can be very funny, but there is not much life.

At the pictures we can see: snowflake moray

Merouroe

Merouroe is located at west of Gapang beach. After crossing a few big rocks that comes out from the ocean there is a nice shallow area to start the dive. It moves forward around the big rocks where you can find beautiful fishes, anemones, stingrays and sometimes if you are lucky turtles. Be careful with the scorpionfish and stonefishes that are poisonous.

At the pictures and the video we can see: morish idol, vagabond butterflyfish, powderblue surgeonfish, midnight snapper juvenile, longnose butterflyfish, threespot dascyllus juvenile, reef stonefish, turtle, blue-spotted ribbontail ray, shoal of black jacks following a shoal of starghorn damsel.
